Born of the Himalayan foothills

A cow is never just a cow. The Badri was made by the Himalayan foothills, her small frame, her sure footing, her hardiness drawn from steep ground and thin air. For generations hill households have kept a few head apiece, close to the terrace fields, and asked little of the land to do it. This is her bloodline. And now a little of it comes home with you.

We are not making Badri ghee yet. Join the list and we will tell you when we do. The list is how we decide what to make next.

  1. The breed

A small, light frame in mixed colours, with short legs and a sure foot. Suited to steep ground and thin air.

  2. The land

The hill districts of Uttarakhand, where grazing is steep, broken and high.

  3. The people

Hill households who keep a few head apiece, close to the home and the terrace fields.

  4. Her history

The hill cattle of Uttarakhand, recognised as a distinct breed only in 2016. Before that she was simply the local cow, unnamed and uncounted.

  5. Her milk

A small yield from a small animal, produced on steep grazing where a larger cow could not be kept at all.

  6. Where she stands

Recognition came late and her numbers are low. Her value is in what she can live on, which matters more as hill farming gets harder.
