Born of Haryana

A cow is never just a cow. The Hariana was raised on the northern plains, her strength, her steadiness, her usefulness drawn from worked fields and settled farming. For generations plains households have asked her for the plough and the pail both, and she has answered for each. This is her bloodline. And now a little of it comes home with you.

Want Hariana next?

We are not making Hariana ghee yet. Join the list and we will tell you when we do. The list is how we decide what to make next.

  1. The breed

A white to light grey coat, a long face and a firm, upstanding frame. Worked for draught as readily as for milk.

  2. The land

The irrigated plains of Haryana, long among the most intensively farmed country in the north.

  3. The people

Farming households of the plains, who have relied on her for the field and the pail alike.

  4. Her history

From the plains of Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. For most of the last century one of the most numerous draught breeds in northern India.

  5. Her milk

A modest yield, asked for alongside a day of work. She was kept because she did two jobs, not because she excelled at either.

  6. Where she stands

Numbers have fallen sharply as tractors replaced bullocks across the plains. A dual-purpose breed can lose both of its purposes at once.

  7. Indicative ghee

    soft gold, mellow, everyday
