Born of the Rann

A cow is never just a cow. The Kankrej was forged in the Rann, her strength, her silver, her unbreakable spirit drawn from a vast and unforgiving land. For generations, the same desert families have raised her there, hardened by the same relentless sun and the same endless horizon. This is her bloodline. And now a little of it comes home with you.

  1. The breed

Lyre-shaped horns, a silver-grey coat, a powerful frame and a famously long stride.

  2. The land

The dry country of Banaskantha and the edges of the Rann of Kutch.

  3. The people

Desert pastoralist communities who have moved with these herds for generations.

  4. Her history

From Banaskantha and the edge of the Rann. Exported to Brazil as the Guzerat, one of the foundation breeds behind South American zebu cattle. Prized at home for draught long before anyone valued her for milk.

  5. Her milk

A dual-purpose breed, so yield was never the only thing asked of her. What she gives is rich, and the ghee from it sets firmer and tastes more savoury than Gir.

  6. Where she stands

Her numbers hold where draught animals are still worked. Mechanisation is the quiet threat, because a breed kept for the plough loses its reason to exist when the plough goes.

  7. The ghee

A paler silver-gold, a clean and earthy aroma, and a firmer grain, bold and savoury on the palate.
