Born of the Punjab plains

A cow is never just a cow. The Sahiwal was raised on the Punjab plains, her yield, her patience, her easy temper drawn from river country and steady fodder. For generations, dairying families have kept her for milk rather than the plough, and judged her by what she gave each morning. This is her bloodline. And now a little of it comes home with you.

We are not making Sahiwal ghee yet. Join the list and we will tell you when we do. The list is how we decide what to make next.

  1. The breed

A deep reddish-brown coat, loose skin, a heavy dewlap and short horns. Docile, heat-tolerant and resistant to ticks.

  2. The land

The plains of the Punjab, river country where irrigated fodder grows through the year.

  3. The people

Dairying families of the Punjab, who selected her for the pail over many generations.

  4. Her history

From the Punjab plains, and the most widely exported Indian dairy breed. Taken to Australia, Kenya, Jamaica and elsewhere to bring heat tolerance into tropical dairy herds.

  5. Her milk

The best milking breed India has. A high yield for a zebu, and sustained in heat that would stop a European cow entirely.

  6. Where she stands

The pure line is under pressure from the very crossbreeding her success invited. A great many Sahiwal-type cattle today carry exotic blood.

  7. Indicative ghee

deep warm gold, rich and creamy
